Reflexology Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear for a reflexology treatment?

A reflexology treatment takes place with the client fully clothed. Loose clothing is suitable so the client can lay back and relax in the reclining reflexology chair. Shoes and socks are removed and trousers rolled up to calf level. For facial reflexology I place a towel over the hair to keep the hair oil free.

Is it common to experience emotions during the reflexology treatment?

It depends, you might be having a day filled with emotions whether that be sadness , joy or exhaustion. Sometimes touch, like music, can bring your feelings to the surface and emotions may be released. Please do not be alarmed, this is quite normal and I would simply ask if you feel okay to continue, and monitor how you are doing and adjust the treatment accordingly.

Is it okay to talk during the reflexology treatment?

Yes it is fine to talk, but you may get more benefits from a relaxing treatment if you let go of your everyday worries and concerns. If you are nervous about the process and feel the need to engage in conversation I will understand. Keep in mind that all therapists are trained not to talk themselves during the treatment, but I will simply answer your questions, and will stay in constant contact with you regarding my pressure levels and measuring relief, adjusting the pressure if required.

How often should you have a reflexology treatment?

Results from reflexology are often accumulative. You are more likely to see greater benefits from regular sessions (for example, once a week for six weeks or twice a month) than if you had a couple of sessions in a six month period. I liken it to going to the gym. You will see required results from regular sessions more than if you go once a month.

How long does a reflexology session last?

A session will last 60 minutes. The first session will include a free consultation which lasts 15-20 minutes where medical history is taken and any medication you may be currently taking.

What does a reflexology treatment feel like? Does it hurt?

Everyone's personal experience is different. Some people experience tingling in areas of the body, some people may speak more, some may feel elated as the energy starts to flow. Most clients enter into a deep state of relaxation. Areas of congestion may be uncomfortable but should not be painful. I constantly check that you are comfortable and adapt the pressure I apply to suit you.

My feet are very ticklish. Will I be able to tolerate reflexology?

The pressure I use with my fingers will be firm and precise on your feet so it should not feel ticklish.

How will I feel after the reflexology treatment?

Many clients feel a wonderful sense of well being after the treatment. Reflexology may help the body eliminate waste and toxins so it is important to stay hydrated post treatment. Many clients experience a reaction such as increased bowel movements, increased urination or perspiration or a runny nose etc. I believe this to be a sign that the treatment is working well and is known as a ‘healing reaction’.

The body will take the benefits of the treatment where it needs to go at that particular time. If the body's systems needs revving up that's where the benefits of the treatment will be felt and the client will feel energised and invigorated. If the body's systems need to relax and slow down then that's where the body will take the benefits of the treatment and the client may feel very relaxed.

After a treatment it is good to have some quiet time. Relax and sleep if needed. Try not to take on anything too energetic allowing the treatment to work its way through the body systems.

Are there any possible side effects to the treatment?

There are no side effects to reflexology as such but occasionally there can be what known as a ‘healing crisis' after the treatment which means pre- existing symptoms can temporarily worsen while the body tries to re balance the systems. If this does happen it usually surpasses within 24 hours.

What form of payment is accepted?

I accept credit/ debit card payments, cash or cheques.

What is your cancellation policy?

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Failure to contact me to cancel within that time frame will incur 50% of treatment fee.

50% of the treatment fee is payable up front by bank transfer for first time clients.

I will contact you via text or email 24 hours before the appointment is due as a reminder.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is individual and some people respond to reflexology more quickly than others. Symptoms of health problems that have been present for a while realistically would take longer before the benefits are felt. Reflexology is accumulative and more effective with regular treatments. The number of treatments needed also depends on the reason why you were having the reflexology. Please feel free to contact me on a no obligation basis to discuss the possible number of treatments you may need.

Guidance on treatments

After receiving one treatment you will feel the benefit of that treatment.

However, when clients have regular treatments, the body is enabled to have a continuous flow of holistic attention. This will help to break down and ease stress, anxiety and tension or any dis-ease that you may be experiencing within the body.

When the block booked sessions are complete, then it would be what we call 'maintenance treatments', at least once a fortnight or once a month depending on your finances and time frame. This is advised to help keep the body in optimum health.

Massage Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to take all my clothes off?

During a massage treatment you will need to undress down to your underwear. I will leave the room during this time of dressing/ undressing. Every part of your body is covered by towels at all times except the part of the body I am massaging.

Will it hurt?

Deep tissue massage can be painful in places, especially if you have a lot of congestion or knots (trigger points) in your muscles when you have a treatment. Many people describe the pain as a ‘good pain’ as they can feel the treatment working. I always check in during the massage regarding my pressure as this enables me to adjust it if necessary.

Do you take male clients?

I take on male clients by referral only.

What if I fall asleep, snore, or drool during my massage?

This often happens during a massage and is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is a sign you are relaxed.

Can I blow my nose, itch, or get up and go to the bathroom during a session?

Of course! I don’t want you lying there uncomfortable and preoccupied, so feel free to take care of it.

What if I forgot to shave?

No problem!

Should I tell you if I have a rash or wart?

Yes, please let me know right away.

What if I find it uncomfortable to lay face down?

If you are uncomfortable laying face down, or in any other position, please let me know. Bolsters and towels can be used to make you as comfortable as possible.

What if I’ve experienced a trauma (or abuse) that is still triggered by touch? Should I let you know?

Yes, absolutely let me know if you do not want to be touched in a specific area or in a certain way. You don’t have to give me any details, and you have the right to ask to take a break or end your massage all together at any time, for any reason.

What if the pressure isn‘t right for me?

Communication is a key element to any good treatment as each client is different. I will not be at all upset or offended if you ask for more, or less, pressure: It’s my aim to deliver an individually tailored treatment and feedback is always welcome.
